About Us

Located near Elk Lake in the Greater Victoria, BC area, we are a parish in the Archdiocese of Canada of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA). We strive to transform our lives, love our neighbours, and grow in Christ through the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

Our community includes people of all ages, ethnicities, and backgrounds — whether lifelong Orthodox Christians or those exploring the faith — who gather for worship each week.

Whether you are seeking spiritual growth, exploring your faith, visiting from out of town, or simply curious, we warmly invite you to join us and experience the richness of our Orthodox faith with us.

Service Schedule

We begin our celebration of the Lord's Day each weekend with Great Vespers on Saturday evening at 5:00 PM. This prayer service typically lasts about 40 minutes.

On Sunday mornings, we gather for the Divine Liturgy at 10:00 AM, which usually lasts about an hour and a half.

Services for the feasts and fasts of the liturgical year are scheduled as announced. Please check our online calendar for the most up-to-date information.

I'm New - What Do I Need to Know?

Welcome to All Saints of Alaska Orthodox Church!

There is a lot to see and experience in an Orthodox Church, and we want to hear from you, especially if you have questions or comments. Most of all, we invite you to come pray and worship with us.

In the meantime, we hope this section helps orient you before your first visit. If you’re wondering what the Orthodox Church is about, this video may be a helpful introduction.

My First Visit

We are honoured that you are considering joining us for worship! Eastern Christians have a long and rich tradition of encountering God, and we are eager to share that with everyone who comes through our doors. Some aspects of the service may be familiar, and others may not — that’s perfectly normal. Here’s a helpful summary of what to expect.

Please arrive a few minutes early to settle in before the service begins. When you enter, one of our greeters will welcome you and answer any questions you may have.

Orthodox Christians generally stand in reverence during worship, but please sit whenever you need to. We also use incense in our services; if it causes any discomfort, feel free to step outside for fresh air.

In our age of constant distraction, church is an opportunity to renew our souls and encounter the mysteries of God. Please turn off cell phones and electronic devices during the service. If an urgent need arises, kindly step outside before using your device.

Communion

We hold the reception of Holy Communion as sacred and reserve it for Orthodox Christians who have prepared through prayer, fasting, and regular confession.

For our other friends in Christ, we invite you to receive the blessed bread and wine offered on the tray to the side.

If you are visiting from another Orthodox parish and wish to receive Communion, please introduce yourself to Fr. Kyle before approaching the Chalice.

Parish Life

Every Sunday after the Divine Liturgy, we gather for Coffee Hour to enjoy complimentary coffee, tea, and light refreshments together. This is a time to socialize, catch up with one another, and get to know new faces.

On special occasions, we often share a meal to celebrate together. We’d love for you to join us — it’s a great opportunity to experience our community’s hospitality!

We offer a variety of opportunities for learning and spiritual growth throughout the year:

Adult Classes: These are held periodically and will be announced and posted on our online calendar.

Catechism: For those wishing to join the Orthodox Church, catechism classes are offered annually to guide you through the foundations of the faith.

Retreats and Guest Speakers: Occasionally, we host special retreats and welcome guest speakers for deeper exploration of our faith.

Check our calendar regularly to stay updated on upcoming classes and events!

There are several ways to participate in the liturgical life of our parish:

Readers: Readers work closely with the clergy and choir, chanting the responses and portions of the Liturgy not sung by the choir, especially the Psalms.

Servers: Men and boys over the age of seven are welcome to serve in the altar. This sacred responsibility involves assisting the clergy and attending to the various tasks necessary during the services.

Choir: The choir leads the congregation in offering our collective “sacrifice of praise” to God (Heb. 13:15). Choir practices are scheduled as needed and supported with online resources.

If you would like to be involved in any of these ministries, please speak to Fr. Kyle.

In the Orthodox Church, children are considered full participants in worship, just like adults. Therefore, we keep our children with us during services — we do not offer childcare or Sunday School during the Divine Liturgy. While this may seem daunting to new visitors, rest assured that with practice, children can engage with even our longer services.

Church School for school-age children is held on Saturdays at 4:00 PM in the classrooms downstairs.

We welcome children of all ages in our services. However, if your child becomes loud or distracting, please feel free to step out of the nave for a quick breather and return once they’ve settled. There is a baby monitor set up in the downstairs hall so you can still follow the Divine Liturgy while taking a break.

Babies and toddlers are welcome to have small snacks like Cheerios or Goldfish, but please avoid snacks that are messy, sticky, or wrapped in noisy packaging. Please avoid bringing toys that may create noise.

The Intercessors Group helps us cultivate the habit of prayer — interceding for our parish, its people, each other, and those we hold in our hearts. We also pray for our southern Island region, the Archdiocese of Canada, and the wider world.

This group offers a chance to pray together during the week, even when no services are scheduled at the church. We meet for an online prayer gathering via Zoom most Thursdays at 8:00 PM.

The All Saints Women’s Group welcomes all women aged 18 and up for fellowship, service, and community-building. We gather throughout the year for a variety of activities and take a break during the summer months.

Our past events have included:

-Floral decor workshops

-Tea socials

-Hosting the annual parish blini lunch

-Pysanky (Ukrainian egg decorating) workshops

-Charity cookathons

We’re always finding new ways to connect, create, and serve together. We’d love for you to join us!
